How to Make Herbal Shampoo

Make Your Own Herbal Shampoo

Making your own herbal shampoo at home isn’t as complicated as you might think. There are a few simple rules to follow, and soon you can use herbs to improve the condition of your scalp and hair.

Different herbs can be used for different hair types. Normal hair is the easiest to deal with because you can use any herbs you wish, such as chamomile, lavender, or rosemary. If you have blond hair you can use marigold petals. The same herbs can be used for dry hair as well. Oily hair can benefit from lavender, lemon grass and rosemary leaves. Lemon grass and rosemary leaves also help with dandruff.

Finding a Base

The best base for making your own herbal shampoo is any baby shampoo, and this suits all hair types. Baby shampoo doesn’t contain as many chemicals as regular shampoo and therefore will give you the best results. Normally to obtain your herbal shampoo you need to mix one part of the baby shampoo with about five parts of the herbal fusion.

Make Herbal Fusions

To make herbal fusions, first choose the herbs you want to use according to your hair type. These herbs need to be boiled in distilled water, or rain water. Don’t use hard tap water for boiling. Then use some cheesecloth to strain the herbs. Once you strain the herbs, allow them to cool and then add them to the baby shampoo. If you want the shampoo to lather like most commercial shampoos then you can add in some foam agents. If you want to create a pleasant scent in your herbal shampoo you can add a few drops of essential oil into the mixture

Add the Herbs

Chamomile flowers can be used to lighten and soften hair. If you are a blond, then chamomile can help to bring back your natural highlights. To make herbal shampoo out of chamomile, mix four tablespoons of chamomile flowers that have been dried with one pint of water. Boil it for thirty minutes, and then add it to baby shampoo after cooling. The same procedure can be followed for lavender, lemon grass, marigold petals and rosemary leaves.

Lavender is useful in stimulating hair growth as well as reducing an itchy scalp. Lemon grass can help tone your scalp and keep dandruff away. Marigold petals produce a lighter hair color and can therefore be used for blond hair. Rosemary leaves can help prevent and reduce hair loss by unclogging follicles and stimulating hair growth. It can also prevent dandruff and enhances dark hair.

If you’re using other herbs, then there is a simple formula that can be followed. Chop up two teaspoons of the herbs and mix it with a cup of water. Pour the mixture into a pot. Mix it while bringing the mixture to a boil. Then let it cool for twenty minutes. Use cheesecloth to strain the herbs and then drain the herbal water into a container. Don’t use a glass container, use a plastic one. You can store this mixture for up to a year, so date the container to know when it will expire. Shake it well before applying it on your hair.
