Distinctive Black Hair Designs

Black Hair Designs

Black hairstyle designs that are sported by African American celebrities are becoming more and more popular, even with people of different ethnicities. Thanks to styling technologies such as curling irons, rollers, crimping irons, hair extensions, and flat irons, any type of distinctive hair design can be fashioned even if you don’t have naturally black hair.

The afro is a hairstyle that is quite distinctive to Africans, but can also be fashioned for people whose hair is naturally found in tight curls. The hair is designed so as to make it jut out from the scalp. It is the same all over the head and the shape of the afro can be different, according to the preference of the wearer.

Afro puffs are similar to the afro and can be fashioned using an elastic holder on natural hair. The hair is worn in a way that makes it puff up outside the elastic holder. Those who desire a neat but trendy look can opt for this hair design, and can also use it as a way to highlight the beauty of naturally black hair.

Bantu, also called zulu knots, is a hair design that is made by parting the hair into many sections before twisting strands of hair into firm, tight knots. The size of the sections can be varied, as can the size of the knots. The sections can be broken into different shapes such as round, square, or triangular. If you want to be particularly creative, intricate designs can be worked out into the sections. The hair is finally twisted into a coil and the ends are secured with see-through rubber bands that are barely visible.

Braids are a popular black hair design and almost everyone can pull this look off. Hair is separated into several strands and then braided into rope-like formations. Three strands are the simplest to braid, but there are five-strand braids, twelve strand braids, and so on, which are obviously a bit more complicated. Braids can be made close to the individual’s scalp, or made looser.

Cornrows are another traditional black hair design. It is made up or very tight braids that are made as close as possible to the scalp as is considered comfortable. They can, like bantu, be made into intricate designs and shapes. These are the easiest hair design to maintain and will stay in shape for several weeks, and a hair net is all that is needed to wash this hair. Both men and women sport this hair design, with women usually adorning the cornrows with colorful threads, beads or ornaments.

Dreadlocks are a popular black hair design that is making a comeback. It is also known as dreads or locks. It can be achieved by interlocking coils of hair which form by themselves in all hair types. Fine dreadlocks can be obtained by letting the hair grow without any combing or brushing. The idea is let the hair get tangled up on its own, and not to rid your hair of these tangles. Special care is needed to sport this hair design, mainly when washing and re-knotting it.
