Black Hair With Blonde Highlights – How To Get That Look

By

Black Hair With Blonde Highlights

Getting blonde highlights on a black hairstyle sounds like a rather daring and radical look. But it is no longer just being fashioned by punk rockers and movie stars, but is also becoming popular with the more conservative types as well.

Highlighting came into being with the aim or giving natural and more subtle hair coloring to one’s existing pigmentation. Usually highlights are given in the same color as the base hair color, maybe a shade or two darker or lighter. But as it has been proved, having highlights that are more than two shades darker than your base hair color is possible and can actually look quite good.

Directions for Achieving The Look

The first thing that you need to do to achieve this look is color all of your hair black. This needs to be done through a rinse, however, and not through a permanent color. This is because a rinse is similar to a coating, whereas a permanent hair color would be penetrating the shaft of the hair. Therefore the black is easier to remove when the highlights need to be applied if it is simply coated onto the hair.

Immediately after the processing of the rinse, comb the hair back straight, and wear a highlight cap, which is similar to a swimming cap. A highlight cap, however, have very small holes in it. Use a rat tail comb to pull tiny sections of hair out of the holes completely.

Leaving the cap on, wash the sections of hair that have been pulled through the highlight cap’s holes. Soak these sections of hair in clarifying shampoo. Rinse the shampoo and repeat the process once more. This is done to remove the black hair rinse that was just applied and leave the natural hair exposed, so that is can readily be lifted.

Lifting is a procedure where hair color, whether natural or artificial, is removed from the hair shaft. This needs to be carried out before a new color can be applied to the shaft. It is mainly used on a dark hair color that needs to go much lighter. The lift can be found in both cream and liquid forms. Apply it only to the exposed hair, and rinse it out after letting it penetrate. Then the hair shafts are ready for the hair color.

Apply the chosen blonde color to the exposed hair. After the allotted time, rinse our the color. Remove the highlight cap and condition the entire hair. Rinse it well and then style the hair as usual.

Eventually the black rinse will start to fade, and at this point it needs to be re-rinsed black. The hair that was previously highlighted will of course, be lighter. Single out this previously highlighted hair and re-rinse the rest of the black hair.

Returning to an all black hair style is quite easy, because the highlights can be lifted or dyed black. This look can be used daily if you’re feeling brave, or just for wild occasions such as costume parties or if you want a particularly dramatic look for a while.
